3-Day Juice Cleanse

With few plans during the beginning of our week and warmer weather fast approaching, I figured this coming week would be the perfect time for a juice cleanse. I keep telling Daniel how much I’ve wanted to try one but I’ve never gotten around to it – either I haven’t had, or made, time to sit down and figure out the exact juices to make (which is necessary for me so I don’t cheat or completely fall off) or my schedule hasn’t been open enough to allow a 3-day uninterrupted cleanse. But here we are now and I have no excuses.

I’ll be rotating through these four juices during the three days so I (hopefully) don’t get too burnt out by the same-old-same-old. All of these detox drinks bring vital nutrients that I’m sure my body has been lacking, especially just coming out of a cold Wisconsin winter. I will say, though, Daniel and I juiced about fives times within the last six-months – we use this juicer and it is a-ma-zing. I’m sure we’ll juice a lot more this summer when it’s warmer and the fruit is riper. Hello, Famers Markets!

Beginning: My body feels tired, even before my (almost daily) two-mile runs. I feel like I regularly need to take mental health breaks on the weekend to decompress and rejuvenate. I feel bloated almost constantly, and not just around my cycle. My food cravings are constant and if snacks are sitting out, I’ll pick one out even if I’m not hungry. I’m not the best with self control when it comes to food so hopefully this little reset helps!T

During: I feel crabby. Maybe it’s withdrawls from food or sugar? I am hungry almost constantly and honestly look forward to going to sleep so I can wake up and have another glass of juice. My favorite juices hands down are the Orange and the Red Detox. I use the Orange as an afternoon pick-me-up (the Ginger for breakfast and Green for mid-morning snack). The Red Detox is my favorite so I have that for dinner. I look forward to 2PM-8PM the most so I can have my favorite juices. Is that a sad way to look at this? I’ve ran 2-miles the last two days and still had the energy to do that so I’m not feeling too lethargic from not having food.

After: So. I did it. It was a CHALLENGE. I was moody, I was hungry. I read a few reviews and people said they felt their mind was clearer after and to be honest, I’m not sure I really felt that. Maybe I wasn’t giving myself enough juice at a time – I had 16oz glasses at a time – but all in all, I dropped 9lbs (just in time for Sadie’s wedding) and definitely felt less bloated and tummy troubles associated with food. I don’t know if I would ever implement another 3-day cleanse into my life but I am looking forward to doing a 1-day cleanse probably every month, just for a detox and reset.

Wedding Bells: The Necessities

Pinterest proved to be our saving grace when it came to planning our wedding in three-months. My Wedding Bells board had acquired over two-hundred pins from the last seven years so I quickly took to it, weeding out the definitely-no’s and getting giddy butterflies over the definitely-yeses. We knew we wanted a lot of greenery and, obviously, a lot of white. We decided on more of a clean, Rustic Wedding theme.

We visited a few venues together, aka five local parks, the last of which I literally cried at (cue the, “We’re never going to find a venue!” reel). Daniel, being the patient fiancé that he was, promised to find the perfect venue and, lo and behold, the first site he and one of our groomsmen looked at turned out to be a dream – he called in and made a deposit that day. Mind you, I had not even seen this venue and it was already ours. It wasn’t until about two-weeks later that we finally ventured out together and I once again cried. “This is PERFECT!”

With the venue chosen, we were able to better plan the next largest task: the tent. To be honest, I was completely against this idea – I had always wanted an outdoor wedding and a tent, to me, equated to an “indoor wedding”. (I see your eye rolls.) And, I thought, tents are tacky; like for high school graduation parties. However, because the weather in Wisconsin is so unpredictable, I knew it was a necessity. That and the fact that weather.com was saying there would be rain the whole week of October 6. Minor details. Because we were on such a tight budget, we went through the local Party Store (think Halloween costumes and happy birthday balloons) to order what they called a Party Tent that came with yellow string lights. At this point, I kept trying to remind myself that we needed to be as frugal as possible and tried to contain my inner diva screaming NO to the tent with yellow string lights. But picturing a “party tent” in my head did not go over well, not to mention the yellow string lights. (Both of which turned out to be amazing, FYI.) From this same party store, we ordered one hundred white wooden chairs.

As for the dinner tables, my hairdresser knew of a girl from high school who had started her own wedding rental business after getting married herself and having the hardest time planning out all the decorations, etc. Genius and also super convenient for us. I was able to find her rentals on Facebook Marketplace for about a third of the cost for the barn wood tables we were originally looking at renting. Pro Tip: Join as many Wedding Groups on Facebook as you can, especially those in the area; people are always trying to sell their lightly used wedding decor, giving recommendations for caterers, designers, etc.

The menu was probably the easiest part to throw together – think comfort food. Barbecued meat, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes and corn. Not much of a color pallet but, and I’m biased, the best food for an October wedding. And did I mention, only the meat was catered. We had looked into catering options but with plates starting at $17 a piece, we quickly wrote that idea off. One of mine and Daniel’s co-workers has a little smoked meats side hustle and gave us such a good deal on multiple large pans of the most am-a-zing meat. Two nights before the wedding, my mom and aunts had gotten together to peel pounds and pounds of potatoes that they then mashed and froze (the butter, milk and salt would be added the morning of). Most importantly, in my opinion, was the mac n cheese. My dad is about as big of a foodie as I am – when he heard I had wanted to make boxed mac along with the potatoes two days prior, he wouldn’t have it. He decided to wake up early on the morning of our wedding to make the homemade mac n cheese. My mom and I hauled all of the ingredients for the homemade food items from Costco – the most bang for your buck especially if you’re planning to feed seconds and thirds to one-hundred guests! (I honestly just texted my mom this past week thinking about that morning; we met in the parking lot exactly one minute after Costco had opened and traipsed through the store, Starbucks in-hand, buying way too many ginormous cans of corn.) Lastly, for dessert, whenever our family would ask if they could contribute in any way, we always responded with, “Bake a pie!”. We had a huge pie spread for dessert as well as little homemade wedding cookies baked by Daniel’s aunt and cousin; for our dessert, we cut into and fed each other homemade G.F. pumpkin cheesecake (to die).

Comfort Zones

I begin just about every post thinking to myself, How is it already fillintheblank.  In this case, how is it already December?  In 5 days (that I know will fly by), we will have been married for two whole months.  I feel like I’ve only blinked my eyes and we’re here.  But it’s been easy.  Really easy.  And I feel anxious saying that, like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.  But it’s Daniel so I’m not really sure why I expected anything other than ease.

We’ve had both our younger sisters over this past week; Daniel’s sister Bek was over last night to watch the Jim Carrey Grinch with us.  I made a roast and twice baked stuffed potatoes with artichoke and tomatoes.  Tonight, Sadie came over and helped me throw together a Whole30 rendition of Zuppa Toscana (for the second time this week) that I sipped my 19 Crimes red wine with – a match made in heaven.  I helped her with her wedding registry, 149 days and counting, which I’m pretty sure I enjoyed far more than she did. But I digress.

Daniel and I dreamed up our 5 Year Goals earlier this week and it gave me butterflies to think about our future together.  We talked about things we wanted to do on our own (release two more albums for Daniel, finish writing a novel for me), as well as together – start a family.  It’s crazy when we talk about our future, I picture so many kids running around.  I am equally as scared for that next chapter as I am yearning for it.  I know we aren’t quite ready now (see first paragraph noting only two months of marriage) but I know that whenever I say yes, Daniel will be waiting with so much excitement.

Also on our list was clean living. I have been super into wellness the last year and my curiosity is growing.  I want to learn everything I can about all YoungLiving products and my current every-day products.  It’s crazy the more you read into the harmful chemicals and hormone disrupters in most products that line the shelves.  It’s going to be so hard for me to no longer go into Target and purchase the prettiest lotion or body spray. I’m learning to be more conscious about what goes into and onto my body and it’s going to be a journey I can tell.  I stepped out of my comfort zone and started a new oily Instagram all about it too.  Part of me wants more followers (i.e. enneagram 2’s need to be liked, need for approval), while the other part of me wants to keep this on private and not let anyone know it’s me (fear of rejection).  Trying to find balance between wanting to be heard and influence others on my wellness journey while also keeping my inner introvert protected.  Cheers to ending 2018 outside my comfort zone with this new Insta and my sweet little blog.

The Latest Eats

I am having a hard time falling asleep so here I find myself; a second post for the week, a new record!  This week has been a slow-busy.  Work, meal prepping, life, everything moving along at a steady pace.  Daniel and I have actually been able to spend a few hours together every night so far and it has been refreshing.  We don’t even have to be doing anything, just being together has been nice.

There have been more seemingly insignificant happenings as of late… Daniel set up the treadmill we ordered for me from our registry and I have used it every night. I’m not quite where I want to be, or where I think I should be distance-wise, but I’m building and every night gets a little easier.  On Monday, Kenzie cut off 14 inches of her mermaid locks which inspired me to go even shorter with my already short ‘do (which actually pales in comparison; only 3 inches at most, if you measure my shortest layers).  Regardless, it feels so light and healthy and free.  I have also been trying new recipes in the kitchen — I made stuffed pepper tacos last night and a salmon salad on sweet potato chips tonight. Both were h-u-ge hits for me and the man and also so so easy.  Saving below for my memory…

Stuffed Pepper Tacos

  • Cut 6 peppers in half and devein/de-seed.  Arrange in your pan and set aside.
  • Sauté half a red onion with two cloves of garlic.
  • Brown 1lb ground chicken in the same skillet.
  • Add 1 can of drained black beans and 1 can of organic, sugar free tomato sauce.
  • Spoon meat mixture into each pepper half.  Bake at 400º for 20 minutes.

Salmon Salad & Sweet Potato Chips

(aka throw together all leftover ingredients in your fridge)

  • Peel and slice 2 large sweet potato into thin disks.  Spray with coconut oil and bake at 400º for 15 minutes.  Flip and bake for 10 more minutes.
  • While chips are baking, mix together:
    • 1 can salmon
    • ¼ cup Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Mayo
    • 1 thinly chopped celery stalk
    • ¼ cup chopped red onion
    • 4tbsp lime juice
    • ¼ tsp salt
    • A sprinkle of cilantro
  • Arrange sweet potato “chips” on a plate; spoon salmon salad onto each chip.
  • ENJOY. Eat it all and lick the bowl.
